We're carbon neutral

Arrowtown is now carbon neutral.

Our core mission has always been to allow you to make a difference to key environmental issues by doing something as simple as changing your drink. So, it’s really important to us that we operate with sustainable business practices that protect our planet. As a small business, we still want to take responsibility for our impact and make a difference, so we’re really proud to say that we’re now carbon neutral. What does this mean exactly? Carbon neutral means that we remove all of our carbon emissions at a company level.

When it comes to our emissions, our key philosophy is centred on a three-step process:

  1. Measure

  2. Reduce and commit

  3. Removal

Emissions mapping

Over the last few months, we’ve been working with Zevero to calculate all of our emissions. From the sourcing of the ingredients to the drinks landing in your hand (and into the recycling bin), we’ve covered it all. In scientific terms, this means we have covered all three scopes. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as company vehicles. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the electricity we use to make a coffee in the morning. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in our company’s value chain. In our case, this includes our raw ingredients, production, packaging and delivery. Scope 3 is crucial as it accounts for 88.61% of our emissions. Find out more on the different scopes here.

Since our launch, we have taken measures to reduces our footprint in a number of ways. This includes:

  • Using aluminium cans rather than bottles. Current data shows that cans have a lower environmental burden and a high packaging efficiency when placed into cardboard boxes, therefore reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from delivery

  • Producing in the UK to reduce transport miles

  • We have reduced the use of plastic by packaging our drinks directly into cardboard boxes, removing the need for shrink wrap, and using recyclable tape and pallet wrap (pallet, labels and pallet wrap only account for 2% of our packaging emissions and 0.025% of total emissions)

  • All local deliveries are completed in an electric vehicle, which saved 250 kgCO2e

Our emissions

Here are the key results from our carbon emissions analysis:

  • Our corporate footprint over the reporting period was 9.77t CO2e

  • 88.61% of our emissions fall into Scope 3. The majority of these emissions are in the packaging, raw materials and transport of the products

  • Each can produces 0.28kg CO2e

Our removal plan

We’ve partnered with Klimate.co to implement a full removal plan for our emissions. There were a couple of things that were really important to us when choosing the best removal strategy. Firstly, we wanted to ensure that we’re actually removing carbon from the atmosphere, rather than just relying on avoided emissions which is a common approach by companies. Secondly, we wanted to align ourselves with the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting. This is essentially a framework that outlines the best approach to ensure removals help us to reach a net zero society. Klimate.co ensure the highest quality carbon removal by considering factors such as: permanence, rapidity and co-benefits.

We have removed our emissions using Klimate’s market signal portfolio. This involves spreading our investment equally across all types of carbon removal. This strategy allows us to invest in new, up-and-coming technologies that are more efficient, helping to send a signal of demand to these technologies. Ultimately, this will help reduce the price of these technologies and make them more accessible.

Arrowtown's carbon removal methods

As we scale, we’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions. We’re looking to do this in several ways, such as by switching to recycled cardboard packaging. One day we’ll be moving into an office space and we’ll be looking for one that uses renewable energy. We also hope to switch to printed cans in the future, which will remove the need for an external label.

With our conservation partnerships and carbon removals, you can sip easy knowing that each can has all the good impact with none of the bad. We think that calls for a drink.
